Jurandir Moura
Jurandir Moura is an Important figure in the Jiu Jitsu and Vale Tudo (no holds barred) history of Brazil, specially in the Northeast region of the country. Having passed away on January 2010, Jurandir Moura was an 8th Degree Instructor (Coral Belt) and the man responsible for the tuition of several important fighters in the 1950’s and 1960’s era.

Jurandir Moura Biography
Jose Jurandir Moura earned his instructor status from George Gracie, at the time the belt system was different from what it is today and the only belts separating an instructor from a student was the navy blue belt. Jurandir Moura also spent time with Pedro Hemeterio (one of the Carlos Gracie’s top students) and Takeo Yano in Fortaleza, Brazil.
In 1955 Jurandir Moura established his first Jiu Jitsu academy in Pernambuco, North East of Brazil. From that academy he created several important fighters, one of the first being Euclides Pereira, who was also Moura’s neighbour and who Moura invited to come and train when he opened his academy. In 1959 Mora sent one of his students, José Maria to Campina Grande (state of Paraíba), there Jose Maria met and taught Ivan Gomes (another man who would become a big star in Brazil’s fighting circuit).
Jurandir Moura also fought in No Holds Barred from 1960 until 1964 at the “Clube Português” venue (Portuguese Club). He maintained his academy for many years, establishing himself as one of the beacons of the sport in the remote region of Pernambuco.
He passed away on the 28th of January when he was 86 years old. He was buried at the Parque das Flores cemetery.
Would it be possible that Mestre Moura was actually a Mestre Takeo Yano black belt ( Takeo Yano had a challenge match against Helio Gracie in which was declared a draw )? Another coral belt that lives in Pernambuco, is Mestre Morcego, Derval Luciano Rego, who he himself is an Oswaldo Fadda black belt ( Mestre Morcego is president of the FJJ-PE "Federação de Jiu-Jitsu do Estado de Pernambuco) and co-founder of the CBJJ/IBJJF. Red-Black Belt under the lineage of Oswaldo Fadda and Jacê Paulino de Albuquerque. Known for a draw match against the lengedary Rolls Gracie at the end of the sixties in Rio de Janeiro.
I can´t confirm you if Mestre Moura was Black Belt from Takeo Yano. But I can ask my meister. I am a BJJ Black Belt under Mestre Morcego (Derval Rêgo). Ele próprio, Jurandir Moura, me contou que foi empregado da família Gracie e treinou com Jeorge Gracie que lhe promoveu a faixa preta e quando voltou à Recife fez sociedade com Takeo Yano que depois viajou para a Bahia e mais tarde ele fez sociedade com José Maria Freire. Jurandir Moura fez a primeira luta de jiu-jitsu em Pernambuco no Esporte Clube do Recife, contra um militar que possivelmente foi o saudoso faixa preta Vieira Sá, que na época final dos anos 50 morava em Recife, pai de Sazinho atual presidente da Federação de Jiu-Jitu Profissional do Ceará.

Segundo informação do mestre Antonio Sacramento que assistiu a luta: Jurandir Moura fez a primeira luta de jiu-jitsu em Pernambuco no Esporte Clube do Recife, contra um militar conhecido como sargento Guido.

He was promoted by George, but he started jiu-jitsu in Fortaleza. During a trip to Recife he ended up being asked to take the place of Takeo Yano as an instructor there as Yano was moving out. He left my grandfather there, taking control of his workgroup. He never fought Helio but was Euclides’ coach when he beat Carlson as well as Valdemar Santana (who beat Master Helio). His brothers and a student of his were the ones who took jiu-jitsu to Alagoas and Sergipe. My great uncle Jurandi Moura and my grandfather Jairo Moura.
