Ilke Bulut Biography
Ilke Bulut was born on May 8, 1989 in Geneva – Switzerland. Son of a Turkish father and Swiss mother.
Ilke was introduced to competitive sports through judo, a martial art he started practising at the age of 5 (1994). He became a serious judoka in his early teens, though a back injury suffered during a tournament drove him away from the sport. A measure advised by his doctors in 2003.
It was also around 2003 that Ilke and his brothers discovered Pride FC and the sport of mixed martial arts (MMA). Curious about grappling, his brother Okan sought out a jiu jitsu academy in 2004. Dimitri (the middle brother) and Ilke soon followed Okan, and by 2005 the Bulut siblings were all training together at Anderson Pereira‘s gym in Geneva.
Being used to the competitive lifestyle of judo, Ilke immediately started competing, travelling around Europe seeking out the continent’s top tournaments. By 2009 Ilke received his purple belt and became a full time athlete, travelling across Europe and visiting Brazil (Manaus) in search for training and competition.
In 2013 Ilke Bulut was invited to participate in the BJJ Kumite, a competition organised by Lloyd Irvin which gathered the top brown belts in the world. A landmark in the sport and in Bulut’s career.
Ilke’s hard work was rewarded by Anderson Pereira, who awarded him his black belt on June 2014.
