André Ushirobira Biography
André Ushirobira was born on November 4, 1973 in Sao Paulo – Brazil, growing up in the state’s town of Ribeirao Preto.
Ushirobira started training martial arts at the age of 12, through karate (shotokan style) a martial art he pursued for many years, reaching the level of black belt when he was 19. His karate sensei, Mr Isokichi Okuyama a Japanese emigrant living in Brazil, also introduced André to judo and kendo believing this was the best way for his student to be a complete martial artist.
In 1994 André Ushirobira started formally training jiu jitsu, once again following his karate instructors advises, the aforementioned Isokichi and Roberto Sant Anna. Coach Roberto was a researcher of martial arts and combat systems, who believed a real life altercation would usually end on the ground. To improve his own ground game coach Sant Anna started participating in jiu jitsu seminars often relating the information learned back to his karate classroom.
Jiu jitsu wasn’t a popular sport in Ribeirao Preto during the mid 90’s, but André grew fond of grappling the more he trained, eventually relinquishing his karate training to focus solely on his ground game.
In 1995 André Ushirobira met a purple belt from Goiania – Brazil, named Leandro Souza (himself a student of Rodrigo Castro). Souza took André under his wing, coaching and taking him to tournaments. André competed for the first time that same year under Leandro’s coach’s banner.
Leandro Souza carried on visiting Ribeirao Preto regularly for a few years, becoming André’s main source of technical knowledge while also grading Ushirobira up to brown belt. In the meantime André started his own coaching career as a blue belt. With strong teaching skills from his karate background, and with very few BJJ gyms in the area, Ushirobira’s mats become a grappling hub in the region.
In 2000 André Ushirobira prepared for the World Championship in Rio de Janeiro, choosing to train at Nova Uniao for 2 months in preparation for the event. At the team’s headquarters he met and befriended the multiple time world champion Robson Moura, who had recently opened an academy in Ribeirao Preto. The two became friends and upon his return to his native town, André became a pupil of Moura, earning his black belt from Robinho on December 2, 2002.
In 2015 Nova Uniao changed the way it operated, and after 15 years of working under the team’s management, Robson and Ushirobira decided separate from the academy. André would later opt to follow his own path, opening his own academy.
