The Eddie Bravo Invitational’s 6th event (EBI 6) and its US$50,000 prize money has called the attention of jiu jitsu’s biggest names, the latest addition being Roberto “Cyborg”, who joined the tournament’s brackets as of yesterday.
With the date set for Saturday the 30th of April 2016, in Mexico City – Mexico, EBI has now confirmed (through their Instagram account) that 2013’s ADCC open weight champion will be making a run for the EBI open weight title, joining the 2011 absolute champion Galvão.
The 16 men tournament has so far confirmed the following athletes:
- André Galvão of Atos JJ (3x IBJJF World Champion/ 2x ADCC champion)
- Yuri Simões of CTBJJA (ADCC champion/ IBJJF World No-Gi champion)
- Garry Tonon of RGA/Ocean County JJ (3x EBI champion)
- Richie “Boogeyman” Martinez of 10th Planet (EBI runner-up/Onnit runner-up)
- Eddie Cummings of RGA (EBI champion)
- Dean Lister (2x ADCC Champion)
- Vinny Magalhaes (ADCC champion/IBJJF World No-Gi Champion)
- Roberto “Cyborg” Abreu of Fight Sports (ADCC champion)
Although there are still 9 places left to fill in the tournament, the event seems to be shaping up to be one of the best submission only cards of the year.
The Eddie Bravo Invitational’s innovative rule set has been one of the most talked about subjects in the sport as of late. Unusual but highly entertaining, this submission only event follows a format where all submissions are allowed for 10 minutes, after which (if there is no finish) the athletes go to overtime. With the overtime rules, the competitors start from a bad position (chosen by the attacker between armbar control and seatbelt grip back take) for 3 overtime rounds, which will combine quickest submission and escape times.
